Positive relationships are the foundation of effective schools. When we recognise another through our genuine gratitude – without wanting anything in return – we are touching a part of the connection that cannot be touched in any other way. We acknowledge the worth and value of that person, and they are able to see more of this in themselves. This presentation will explore the art of practising gratitude to enable flourishing relationships, with a particular focus on situations where there is conflict or where we actually feel the very opposite of gratitude. Participants will gain research-based strategies that lead to enhanced wellbeing and overall efficacy.
Dr Kerry Howells is a thought-leader, author, award-winning educator and experienced researcher, who has spent over 25 years researching, teaching and practising gratitude. School leaders and teachers at all levels of education, as well as whole school communities have reported flourishing relationships through their gratitude practices.
Some of these case studies can be read in her book, Gratitude in Education: A Radical View, which has been used globally to guide educational programs, pedagogy and many professional book clubs.
Kerry has a particular interest in cross-cultural lenses of gratitude and their implications for communication and has studied this in Australian indigenous and African indigenous cultures.
